The 5 most common at-home waxing mistakes (and how to avoid them)

Ever experienced wax that won't stick, irritated skin, or wax that cracks before you can pull it off? It's not you. It's a technique or prep that can be improved. Here are the 5 most common mistakes (and how to fix them, easily).

Mistake 1: pulling the wax upward

This is the most common mistake and often the reason for unnecessary pain and weak results.

When you pull the wax upward at an angle, you stress the skin more than the hair: more pain, less effectiveness, more redness. Your wax can also break instead of coming off cleanly.

The right technique: flat, against the direction of hair growth, in one quick, sharp motion. The angle should be almost horizontal to the skin.

Mistake 2: waxing wet or moisturized skin

Wax doesn't stick to wet or oily skin. If you wax right after a shower, the wax will slide instead of grip the hair. Same goes if you've applied moisturizer or oil that day.

Wait at least 30 minutes after a shower. Use Pre Wax Lotion right before your session. It removes any residue in seconds and creates the ideal surface for the wax to grip.

Mistake 3: hair that's too short or too long

Ideal length: 3 to 5 mm. This is non-negotiable. Below 3 mm, the wax can't grip the hair properly and will just glide over it. Above 5 mm, the wax pulls on the skin more than the hair and gets way more painful.

If your hair is too long, trim it down before your session. If you wax regularly, the length will naturally be right after 3 or 4 weeks.

Mistake 4: re-applying wax to an already-treated area

Missed a few hairs and want to go over them again? Heads up: applying wax twice in a row on the same spot can irritate the skin, especially in sensitive zones (underarms, bikini). If a hair resists, it's better to tweeze it than to risk re-irritation.

To minimize multiple passes, make sure your wax has the right consistency (thick honey, neither too liquid nor too solid) and that your layer is thin and even.

Mistake 5: skipping prep and aftercare

Your wax session doesn't start when you apply the wax. It starts 48 hours before. A good scrub with our KOKO Coconut Body Scrub preps the skin, frees ingrown hairs, and seriously improves results. And after your session, After Wax Care helps close the pores, soothe redness, and hydrate.

Skip aftercare and you're setting yourself up for more irritation, more ingrowns, and less soft skin. Two minutes of routine, and the difference is real.

To recap

  • Always pull flat, never upward
  • Skin clean, dry, no creams before your session
  • Hair length 3 to 5 mm, always
  • Don't go over the same area twice
  • Scrub before, after-care after, every time, for the best result
